Gaian Leadership |
“Simply brilliant. I had no idea I would be leaving so inspired.” |
| |
| These are the words of one participant in the first Gaian Leadership course that launched in 2007. |
| Little by little we are building a learning community of pioneer spirits. We want participants to discover “the leader within”, the man or woman who will help to redefine leadership so that it is grounded in a healing of the Earth. |
| Our unique course teaches both the science and spirit of Gaia and encourages you to develop your own leadership style. |
| You will learn what modern science has to say about the fragile state of the planet and how we can narrow the "action gap" between what we are currently doing and what we need to do to live in harmony with the rest of Nature. You will acquire or develop further the skills to embody this learning as storyteller, coach, community-builder and strategist. |
| DATES AND VENUE |
The Gaian Leadership course consists of two retreats on January 20-24 and May 5-9, 2009 at the Gaia Partnership, near Hay on Wye. All participants need to attend both retreats. |

| FULL GAIAN LEADERSHIP COURSE |
OUR TEACHERS |
Dr Chris Johnstone, author of the book “Find Your Power”, teaches the science and spirit of Gaia on the first retreat. Richard St.George, a former director of Schumacher UK, teachers healing technologies on the second. We have two experienced coaches, Andrea Steel and Stephen Powell, leading the course throughout, facilitating sessions and offering some one-on-one coaching. |
Dr Stephan Harding of Schumacher College has done much to shape the spirit of our teaching. In his book “Animate Earth: Science, Intuition and Gaia” Dr Harding writes: “To act well, we need to experience the Earth not as ‘nature’ out there, nor as an ‘environment’ that is distinct from us, but as a mysterious extension of our very own sensing bodies that nourishes us with an astonishing variety of intellectual and aesthetic experiences – with the roar of the sea and with the wonderful sight of the night moon reflected in a calm lake. Right action requires us to live into the body of the Earth...” |
THE TWO RETREATS |
We seek to balance heart activity, head activity and action throughout the two retreats.
|
| RETREAT ONE, January 20-24, 2009 – DANCING WITH GAIA |
Participants arrive for supper on the evening of Tuesday, January 20 and the course proper starts on Wednesday morning. |
Day One – Reconnection
Can we experience living into the body of the Earth? The course opens with a walk in the Golden Valley of Herefordshire, to connect with the natural world before any structured discussion or teaching. Introductions before lunch – tell us what dish you would be at a banquet and give us the essence of your leadership contribution. In the afternoon, Dr Chris Johnstone leads a scientific discussion on the current state of Gaia. We end the day with a group discussion on how leadership can contribute to the Earth’s need to heal. |
Day Two – Historical Journeys The cycles of Gaia and the cycles of learning in our own lives. |
Day Three – Creating a Sustainable World
We begin with a discussion on deep ecology led by Dr Johnstone. We introduce a major role-play exercise involving the “Three Horizons” in today’s world:
Horizon 1 – Today
Horizon 3 – Vision or end point
Horizon 2 – Bridge of how to achieve vision or end point.
Working in pairs, we then move into an exercise called Gaia Inc, looking at 12 inter-related aspects of our world. |
Day Four – Pulling It All Altogether
A day for participants to pull together different threads from the whole retreat. |
RETREAT TWO, May 5-9, 2009 – BEING A GAIAN LEADER |
Participants arrive for supper on the evening of Tuesday, May 5 and the course proper resumes on Wednesday morning.
|
Day One – Check-ins around what has been happening for each participant since the first retreat. A look at new ways of living around the themes of developing simplicity, going slow and going local.
Day Two – A deeper look at Healing Technologies with Richard St.George, everything from green architecture to renewable energy.
Day Three – The Pull into Your Future
We look at the potential of biomimicry – mimicking Nature – to shape the world of tomorrow and we concentrate on helping you create a personal vision that pulls you into your future.
Day Four – Next Steps
The final day includes coaching practice and a range of options depending on individual preference. |
